Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Our 6th grade students come to our public charter school because they know we have high standards for all students and we have set the goal to have each and every one of our students on or above grade level before moving onto 9th grade. We just opened this year and our budget has allowed for limited resources.

In order to help us reach that goal, we have workshop-style classes. Reading Workshop allows for students to read independently for 35-45 every day, choosing books from the classroom library. Students complete independent word study based on "spelling demons" self-selected vocabulary words. The problem is, we have only a handful of dictionaries and other vocabulary resources to support this program.

In order to support the development and enrichment of students' vocabulary and word smithing capacity, we need a variety of classroom reference materials in addition to portable reference materials students can use while completing reading and vocabulary assignments outside of class.

Providing each student with his or her own dictionary along with classroom reference materials will allow students to not only improve and expand their vocabularies but also to become more independent in their studies by not having to rely on the "expert" teacher to help them uncover word meanings and usages.
