Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach eighth grade Language Arts at a school where 83% of students receive free or reduced lunch, students are faced with gang activity and crime, and very few students have role models in their lives that are college graduates. But perhaps the most difficult obstacle I have faced with my students is bringing the world that exists outside their small neighborhoods to my extremely bright and energetic students.
I am currently planning a thematic unit based around journeys for my students. We will study the journeys others have taken through literature as we relate difficult journeys to our own lives. The unit will culminate in students imagining their own future journey’s to college as they write an extensive research report on a college and major of their choice. An integral part of this unit will be studying the novel "Into the Wild," if I receive the gift of these books. I have some amazing things planned for my students, including receiving post cards from Christopher McCandless, tying in geography skills by mapping his journey, doing research on Alaska, and viewing the new film as a reward for students earning an ‘A’ on the unit.
To make this unit a reality, I need a class set of the book “Into the Wild.” I will find a way to do this unit even if I don’t receive the books, but being able to share this story with my students will make this a truly memorable educational experience for them.
PLEASE help us go “Into the Wild”. My kids deserve to experience the excitement of this epic story and all the fun and learning that will accompany it. Be a part of our classroom and give us the gift of this novel.
