According to PBS Learning Media 70% of teachers with access to technology in the classroom for their students say it "enables them to do much more than ever before." I wholeheartedly agree! Having technology in the classroom opens so many doors for my students.
Our school is located in rural Eastern North Carolina.
Our school is Title 1 and has limited funding. Our students are full of life and always looking for ways to better themselves. Many of my students have reading gaps and we work all school year (and beyond) to get them on grade level. Using technology to immerse them in science makes content real for students. Information must be accessible and relevant to students in order for them to internalize it - technology helps make this happen! I've seen a huge growth in students interest in and retention of science content since having access to technology in the classroom. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) career fields are growing and I want my students to be prepared for the workforce their generation will enter.
My Project
Last spring thanks to Donors Choose, Duke Energy, and many generous donors my classroom received 5 iPad Minis. These iPads have been an AMAZING addition to my classroom. We use them for labs, remediation, review...so many ways I can't even count. One thing I didn't think about when requesting the iPads was being able to sync them with a computer, I'm currently unable to do this making updating them difficult. This MacBook will be used to support our 5 class iPads, for our class SMART Board, with the motion sensor for our physics unit, and so many more ways! The anemometers will plug into our iPads and be used during our Meteorology Unit. The weather station aligns directly to our Meteorology Unit and will allow students to record weather data in real time, instead of relying on websites and outdated tools. The motion sensor will be used during our Physics Unit to graph the motion of cars students will design and compare the speed/velocity of various objects.
This project will bring my 5th grade science classroom to the next level.
All the items requested will help my students become 21st century STEM scientists. School needs to be a place where what students learn prepares them for the world and ignites their curiosity. Technology helps support people who think outside the box! Help my students expand their brains!
