My students need two trumpets, a slap stick, 50 pencil holders, a new French horn case and some drum practice pads to help prepare for another successful concert season.
Quiet classrooms are BORING! From the moment the students enter my room, frenetic energy fills the air. The students dutifully take out their instruments, and joyful sounds resonate throughout the basement!
They hail from many neighborhoods, and many were born overseas.
They speak different languages. Some are from comfortable middle-class backgrounds, while others live in poverty. Some are in honors classes, and some struggle.
Yet amazingly, when they lift their instruments, they play together as one. In band class they work together, laugh together, and help one another. Barriers that exist elsewhere melt away as the incredible bond of making music draws many individuals together.
My students attend a large public middle school in an urban area. The overwhelming majority of them have never studied a band instrument prior to entering middle school. Through their hard work and dedication, they achieve stellar ratings at state adjudication festivals and share the gift of music both in the school and in the local community.
My Project
The resources I am requesting will be used by students each and every day. The new French horn case will replace the current one, which is held together by duct tape. The two new trumpets will replace two very old ones that have been in our inventory for over 40 years!
The drum practice pads will allow our percussionists to practice their techniques at home, as the vast majority of them do not own drums. The pencil holders will be placed on all of our music stands to ensure that every musician has a pencil readily accessible in rehearsals.
In the year to come, nearly 300 students will enter my room with the goal of learning a band instrument.
It is my duty to give each of them the highest quality music education possible. With limited funds due to a very tight school budget, my students struggle with lack of resources, old instruments, and broken cases. This grant will help my students as we prepare for another fantastic year!
