I teach 16 fantastic first graders at a wonderful school in Portland, Maine. Our school is very diverse. 60% of our students are learning English as a second language (ESL). 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, so most of our students come from low income families and have limited exposure to literature outside of school.
My students have taken a particular interest in books by Eric Carle. For those of you not working with young children, Eric Carle is like a "rock star" in the world of children's literature! He is the author of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" His illustrations are bright, child-friendly collages made of painted tissue paper. In addition to this new interest, my students have been recently introduced to bookmaking by our school’s art teacher. I am hoping to combine these two new interests in one project.
My goal is to embark on a month-long Eric Carle author study with my students. The students would be engaged with Eric Carle's books all month long paying close attention to the author's writing style and the illustrations. Many of Eric Carle’s books focus on things found in nature, which interests many children. Children also enjoy the patterns or predictable text found in his books. After becoming very familiar with the author’s style of writing and illustration, the culminating activity would be to create their own book inspired by Eric Carle.
For this project, I will need 18 of Eric Carle "favorites" for reading and discussing, and materials for book making including tissue paper, paint, paper, and a book binding machine.
With your generosity, my students will be exposed to a wide variety of Eric Carle’s literature. They will be able to develop a deeper understanding of what authors and illustrators do. They will even become authors and illustrators themselves! Maybe this will be just the thing to inspire some future authors and illustrators. Eric Carle, look out!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal. My students thank you, too.
