Stinky Cheese Men, Gooney Birds, and Heros in Underpants
My students need a variety of books on their reading level that will facilitate and motivate them to become strong and independent readers and thinkers.
Picture this: 20 or so 8-year-olds spread out throughout a classroom. They are seated in a variety of ways...desks, bean bags, mats, couches, pillows, etc. Some are sitting. Some are laying. Some are kneeling. Each of these 2nd graders has a pile of books with them. They are feverishly going through each book reading and thinking about the reading strategy taught to them in their lesson today. They are making mental notes about what they're reading and understanding in each story. They are preparing to share with their classmates the ideas and "ah-ha's" they acquire while in the many fantasy worlds produced by the books in their hands. They have carefully chosen each of their books to make sure they are "just right" for them to read, understand, and enjoy. Then imagine them going to the book baskets the next day and not finding the "just right" book to take them to those enlightening places. They have already experienced the magic of the books left in the baskets.
We are a new school. Our school was originally supposed to be a junior high school. Because of growth in our area, we became a k-8 school. We are literally two schools ran under one roof and off of one budget. Due to limited funds, our school does not have classroom libraries available to our 55 Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms.
My students are currently working their way through a small amount of books I've purchased through book clubs. They are getting close to a point where they are having to read the same books over and over. Their new discoveries are almost in void. I would like to provide them with such a variety of books that their adventures in reading can continue to flourish throughout the year. To do this I need a classroom library that has a variety of texts ranging in level, genre, and subject.
Your donation to help create a library filled with characters such as Captain Underpants and Gooney Bird Greene. It can take my students to worlds beyond their imagination like The Black Lagoon. It can expose them and reveal the morals of folk tales and even give another perspective such as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. It can even twist these fairy tales around and introduce them to word play like The Stinky Cheeseman. All of this can lead them to become stronger and more excited readers.
They will become readers for life.
