Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The learners in my classroom have multiple special needs. Some have Down Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy, others have very rare chromosomal disorders or mitochondrial diseases. All make inspiring progress despite their disabilities. They range in age from 16-22 and often are bussed to my classroom from miles away, including students coming from several cities and towns across two states. They travel this distance for a very specialized, individualized education that focuses on ability rather than disability and sees only possibility.
These students work through enormous barriers to learn to do thinks many of us take for granted. In the time they are will me many students go from being non-readers and writers to being able to read and write, they may go from being unable to communicate with others to being skilled at the use of a high technology speech generating device. Some students start at the most basic levels of learning how to care for themselves. In the end they all make progress, amazing progress. These students deserve to be able to take pride in that progress, and thus this project "Pride in Progress". We will make DVDs of each student and the accomplishments they have made during their years in this class.
With a DVD Camera, DVD player and blank DVDs my class can begin to create long term video journals for each students. These journals will show how far each student has come from arrival to graduation. The DVD each student is presented with when they leave our class will focus on the strengths and growth of each student and will be a tool for them to use to educate the professional staff when they arrive at adult service agencies after high school. This will be a long term project that will be created specifically for each student.
Your donation will not only allow us to create our DVD Pride in Progress videos but also to complete many other projects. For example we can film the students for their annual federally mandated assessment tests, make get well videos for classmates who are hospitalized, and get involved in the new discovery of video self modeling to teach social skills to learners with disabilities. Out uses for your wonderful donation are limitless!
