Who uses dictionaries today?
I am a High School Special education teacher. This is my 8th year teaching special education students. Every year, I teach a different subject. This year, I have a 10th grade resource English class.
The one problem that I find as technology advances is the students lack of book use. Everything can be found on the internet. A huge part of my curriculum is VOCABULARY. Many students, not only special education ones, do not know how to use a dictionary. Teaching them these skills is important but are not really needed when all they have to do is type in a word on the computer. I have one computer in my classroom which makes it difficult for all 9 students to use at once.
My students get easily frustrated when looking up words. They often don't know how to prononounce it, how to find it between words, etc. This makes the defining part much more difficult. Sometimes, they give up too easily before finding the word. An electronic dictionary would make it that much easier to define words. It is a simple solution to my problem.
With your help in donating these electronic dictionaries, my special education students will not get stressed out so easily. I know it seems like something so trivial, but believe me, in special education the littlest things make a difference.
