While my primary role is to teach English to deaf students, my role involves collaborating with an ASL teacher to develop literacy skills in both ASL and English print. Deaf students, considered special education students, depend on visual information to access education.
Eight out of sixteen of our students have not entered high school with a clear knowledge of any language. Thus our primary goal is to build a primary language via ASL before we begin to teach academics. Secondly we want them to be readers and writers of English. Ultimately, we want our students to be prepared to enter into the workforce or be college-ready.
A camcorder would enable deaf and hard of hearing students to record signed stories, refer to their own recorded narratives and transfer their signed stories to printed English. Students can also view and edit their signed narratives to later edit their written English. This is especially beneficial to our foreign born students who are learning ASL and printed English at the same time. How wonderful to be able to capture these literacy moments via iMovies.
Your help will allow these students to progress and help us capture those moments of story telling to positively impact literacy and confidence that each student has something of value to contribute.
