Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are hooked on science! Students at Braeburn Elementary School in Houston, Texas are primarily first language Spanish speakers. However, their families realize that English is the language of education in the United States, and these same families have overcome huge obstacles to get their children here. The majority of my students (I teach grade five English as a Second Language) come from low income, hard working Hispanic families. Our school is a Title I school, with low income, at risk students. The difference in our school and many is that our students are well behaved, highly motivated children who will achieve despite poverty. They are decent, honest, respectful, and hardworking children.

Recently I discovered Science materials that are a wonderful asset for student learning. This is a vital set of small books, full of facts and pictures, and well adapted for second language learners. Each set of books has content mastery questions, as well as extensions for art, research, and writing. Developing a vital second language is not easy; these materials provide pictures, high-interest topics ranging from fungi to the Big Dipper, life cycles to Green Sea Turtles, and an educational purpose. A set provides science experiment opportunities to enhance learning experiences. However, books only go so far. We need some tools so we can do experiments, hands on activities that allow students to assimilate what they have learned in books. Besides being educational, experiments are fun!

The request I am making is for a kit that provides tools for experiments, from magnifying glasses to beakers to sand and seeds. These are the materials my class does not have, and would genuinely use and delight in. Materials in this kit would be reusable not only with my current class but year after year. The second item I requested is bugs! We are fascinated with insects, and these tangibles will allow students to experience touching and examining these specimens. I can already hear "yech!" and "cool!" from the students.

You would make it possible for my students to truly learn - not just memorize information from a book, but to use that information and assimilate it so that it will be there for them as they become lifelong learners in science. My students would be most grateful, as would I.
