Today's kids learn in many different ways. Having actual copies of books in their hands instead of workbooks or textbooks is quite meaningful to kids. In my classroom, we don't sit in desks all day. We move about, sit on the floor on pillows or on furniture. We learn through projects and units.
Our school is a "school of choice".
We are founded on the principles of Choice Theory, Multiple Intelligences, and Experiential Learning. Our students choose to come to our school rather than the traditional schools found in our town because they need a different way to learn. We are just now adding middle school to our current K-6 building because we would like to see middle school age students have an alternative as well. Our school is only two years old but we have developed a place that is comfortable and family-like that values learning and is student centered.
My Project
Because our school is still relatively new and with the addition of middle school, our funding is quite limited. There currently are no middle school materials. These books would be used as part of our units on Choices and Challenges and would be in the hands of each of our 7th and 8th grade students. The book Tangerine teaches about how the choices we make effect ourselves, our families and our community. The Giver teaches about the importance of emotion and empathy as well as community. By having an actual book in their hands, my students will be more engaged and learn the importance of reading relevant, quality literature.
My classroom has a very small classroom library--one funded entirely from my own pocket.
The addition of these two class novel sets will expand that library substantially.Today's kids, now more than ever, need to learn the value of reading and quality literature. Having access to actual books rather than an online source or an excerpt printed in a textbook, will facilitate that learning.
