As an elementary school 5th grade teacher, I teach everything under the sun! You name it, I've taught it...including computer lab time.
I have a very active, technology savvy class of 33 ten year olds this year, and they LOVE the computer lab!
However, the unfortunate thing about our public school server is that it erases every shred of their work as soon as they log out. This means if the printers are down, or if they don't finish their papers, they cannot save and need to start over from square one the next chance they get in the lab. It's a profound loss for some, who have no Internet access at home.
Because we are a smaller school with a student body of only 250, we often find ourselves scraping together money for things we need. Computer equipment and extras for the lab don't normally receive any funding at all, unfortunately.
We work in the lab mainly for research and essay writing. However, not having flash drives has held us back from doing more, long-term work on research papers and science projects.
The solution to our dilemma would be to have a flash drive for each child. This would allow for each child to save their files on their own drive so they wouldn't feel rushed to finish and produce sloppy, careless work.
The kids love to work on their projects, essays, papers, and homework in the lab and on the computers. Having them in the lab encourages them to work harder to succeed, and it shows. Their work is lovely, and I can see how proud they are when they accomplish something truly worth their weight. It's amazing what access to a computer and a flash drive can do to extend their learning and encourage them to try harder, work thoughtfully, and put forth effort in school.
