Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Our High School is a public school serving students from the inner city in Virginia. The Drama Club is an extracurricular program that is open to ALL students interested in the arts, entertainment, theater, film, and music.

This year, the students have unanimously decided that they want to learn more about film, create their own films, and present them to the student body as well as community. However, the Drama Club does not have a camcorder to record the great ideas that students come up with.

Ironically, the school computers come equipped with video editing software (Windows Movie Maker). However, we need equipment to capture the film. With a digital camcorder, the students can begin building their own stories through visual interpretation and the use of technology. Not one of the drama club students own a DVD camcorder; however, they own the capacity to dream and to be excited about writing their own films. They would also become the key video team for the school, documenting school functions for the student body and community as a whole.

This year, the Drama Club wishes to try something that has not been done at this school and that is producing student-written and produced work. This is a piece of equipment that can be used for years to come. Please, help be a part of history in the making as we empower tomorrow's Spike Lees and Steven Spielbergs!
