Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my art room includes a full schedule of third, fourth, and fifth grade artists learning, creating, and designing.
My students are third, fourth, and fifth graders.
My school is located in an urban Latino area where there is not a significant budget for an art program. Most of my students come from low income homes but are always eager to begin new art projects and are always fully engaged in their work.
My Project
When my fifth graders go on to middle school next year they will not have an art program any longer within our school district. I feel that it is extremely important to expose my students to as many art mediums as possible while I am their art teacher. Clay is one of the three-dimensional mediums my students ask for the most, and we unfortunately do not have a kiln to use. Air dry clay is the second best thing, and I would love for my students to become aware of the feeling of sculpting with clay and its transformation into ceramic.
My students will have experienced one of the most rewarding and therapeutic sculpting methods in fine arts if they have the chance to use clay this year.
They will also get an excellent lesson in art history, by learning the background and history of clay.
