Do you remember the first time you read an entire book all by yourself? Or how about the first time you spelled a word on your own? These are fundamental and crucial literacy skills that my kindergarten students work on mastering each day.
I am the proud kindergarten teacher of 19 fantastic 5 year olds at a charter school in Northeast Washington, DC.
My students come from a low-income community and several of them are english language learners. Our school day runs long, beginning at 8:00am and ended at 4:00pm, but nevertheless, my students remain curious and excited to learn throughout the day! They love to play outside, listen to stories, and practice their writing skills. This is my second year with these students as I was their pre-k teacher last year and I am so proud to see them flourish in kindergarten.
My Project
One of the most critical skills taught in kindergarten is reading. For a select few of my students, this comes easily; however, it has been a challenge for many in my classroom. Because of this, I wanted to introduce new and exciting literacy tools into the classroom through this project. With these materials, our literacy block will be well-equipped with brand new center activities, such as magnetic letters, letter stamps, and rhyming activities. I believe that, with the introduction of new materials, more students will be reached. These materials are fun, play-based, and tactile, which is what my students who are struggling grasping literacy skills, such as rhyming and phonemic awareness, will need to begin reading.
Donations to this project will help my students learn how to read and master crucial literacy skills.
They will be introduced to new center activities that will allow them to deepen their understanding of skills such as rhyming. Through this project, my students will experience a robust yet fun literacy block that will benefit my entire class and ultimately enable them to read independently and prepare them for the first grade.
