Building Self Esteem Through Music and Movement in Sp. Ed.

Through movement and music students who struggle with academics build much needed self esteem and have greater gains in academics, students do yoga, hula hoop, dance and play instruments.

I teach special education to students in kindergarten through seventh grade in a high needs, low income school. The students here are very active and many of my students need alternate ways of learning. I have done many exciting projects with my students making hula hoops, dancing, yoga, making music and movies and playing instruments. The results are very exciting in that they have gained knowledge and have created connections that help them with reading, writing and math as well as how to appropriately interact with their peers. Finding what the student has a passion for and what they can be successful in is a amazing experience for them and for me. They have more confidence in themselves and are more relaxed at school creating a calm mind enabling them to intake new information. The results are visible within one session that they were able to do something they are good at and the classroom teachers notice it also. We need more supplies to continue this program and to include more students. We need yoga mats, supplies to make hula hoops, music and music players, exercise balls, a carpet and instruments. I have found my passion in creating an environment where students feel comfortable to be themselves and to try those things that they always wanted to but were afraid that they are never good at anything.
