Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am beginning my 6th year as an elementary teacher for the students that have been called "the forgotten ones" or "the written-off ones" because they have challenges that the "average" student does not. They cannot read, write, or do math as well as their peers. Because of the limited resources, I am not able to read to them as I wish. I believe that a student who needs help with reading, i.e. getting to know the word, understand its meaning, and how it sounds, needs to hear how it sounds to read and use words. Because of my situation, I am not able to allow my students to hear books on tape. I think that they would gain something new to hear another person read a book to them and perhaps motivate them to read on their own. It is my hope that I will be able to provide the books on tape and the earphones needed in my classroom, so that my students will find the courage inside themselves to read on their own and push themselves to become more than "average," go beyond their peers, and one day graduate from college with multiple degrees.
