My Students

Do you remember the joy you felt in school when you were encouraged to be creative? Many of my high school students have forgotten this feeling. I would like to provide them with an experience that would help them rediscover their creative side.

I teach at an alternative high school where we only offer classes in the four core areas.

We are located on the campus of a community college where artwork from local artists is prominently displayed in every area of the building except our wing. Many of my students are phenomenal artists and have expressed their desire to create works of art to display in our hallway. The vast majority of my students are at risk of dropping out of school. They have additional responsibilities outside of school that most teens do not have to worry about such as raising younger siblings and taking care of their own babies. Approximately 25% of my students are teen parents. Quite a few of them hold down part-time jobs in order to help their families make ends meet. This project would showcase their talents and allow them to feel like they have contributed something meaningful to our school community.

My Project

We are so fortunate at my school to have plenty of technology, but there are times when I would like for my students to create something with their hands and their imaginations. Unfortunately, recent budget cuts mean we do not have any funds to purchase art supplies. I am requesting paints, brushes, and a canvas for each of my students. If this project is funded, we will take a couple of class periods to paint and unleash our creativity. My students will create works of art that will be displayed in our school where the hundreds of visitors that pass through the halls each month can appreciate them. Each student will feel a sense of accomplishment knowing they created a work of art that helped make our school beautiful. My students will take ownership in their school and feel a deep sense of pride while learning how meaningful it is to contribute to a group project.

Many of my students have not had the best experiences in school.

Some of them have been written off and told they will never amount to anything which has resulted in them having very low self-esteem. This art project will allow them to express themselves while showcasing their talent. Sometimes a project like this can impact students in ways that we cannot even begin to comprehend.
