Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Beethoven Street Elementary School is a small neighborhood school. Although our school is designated as a Title 1 school and has a diverse population, our students are high achieving.
In third grade, the teachers read aloud Mr. Popper's Penguins to our students as part of our Money Thematic Unit in Language Arts. The students love to read along with their own copies of the books. We integrate economics, math, and science in this unit as well.
Over the years, I have purchased many used paperback copies of this book. However, after several years of 60 students a year using these books, our books are completely worn out.
We would like to replace our worn out copies with sturdier versions of these books and cds so that we can also use these books in a listening center. Students really remember how much they enjoyed this unit when they come back to visit. We would really like to continue being able to offer it.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
More than half of students from low‑income households
