This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For my students, walking is not exercise; it is the only form of transportation to which some of these students and their families have access. This makes teaching middle school Physical Education a special challenge because exercise is not something many of the students seek out. With childhood diabetes due to obesity running rampant in our student population, it is absolutely necessary to get our students up and moving.
Every day, my goal is to get my students to experience success by playing something that interests the students, whether it is softball, kickball, soccer or even juggling.
The P.E. classes at our school are the largest classes on campus, often with 60 or more students per class. When there are 8 classes of 60 kids each period, it is difficult for each class to have access to basic equipment, including balls and beanbags. Getting enough equipment for all to use will help students be more engaged and, I hope, will encourage students to continue to play and get add a little more physical activity in their lives.
