My Students

Our Spanish textbooks set the vocabulary and grammar lessons in the context of an ongoing story. As the story develops, students internalize the Spanish they hear and see. EXCEPT... when they can't see much at all, since we presently view the DVDs on an 18" screen television sitting atop a cart.

The World Languages Department at our California high school aims to prepare students to be multilingual citizens of the world.

We consider aural comprehension, oral fluency and cultural knowledge to be equally as important as excellence in reading and writing the target language. Our Spanish textbooks are communicative, meaning they present the language in the context of an ongoing story. We also show portions of authentic movies and TV shows to reinforce new concepts and to enhance aural comprehension.

My Project

When we receive and mount our large-screen television, my Spanish classes will be able to easily grasp the meaning of each chapter's vocabulary and grammar as the characters use the language in context. That comprehensive input is the first step towards language acquisition. From there, students begin to give simple responses to oral and written stimuli, showing that they comprehend. Finally, after quite a bit of practice, they speak and write complex sentences- i.e., they COMMUNICATE!

A big screen television in my classroom will be the gift that keeps on giving!

It will be used by 5 classes a day, for years to come. Authentic input of all types- movie clips, news reports, music videos, interviews- will make the language come alive for the students. The text book DVDs will be given the prominence they deserve in a communicative classroom.
