My Students

Do you remember spending endless hours building and designing your own creations with old fashion wooden blocks and Legos, and the satisfaction and excitement that came with your own design? Now, you have the chance to bring that same sense of excitement to many students.

I am a first grade teacher teaching in a low-income neighborhood.

My school is composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-income. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help broaden their children's experiences and interests. Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to take their children to explore the world beyond the hectic confines of their homes. Moreover, parents barely make enough money to make ends meet, let alone buy toys to stimulate their children at home. Many of my students never owned blocks or Lego's; instead they watch endless hours of television at home.

My Project

These various building blocks that will enhance my students' creativity during playtime. Imaginets challenges students to recreate designs using various shapes and allows them to enhance the designs. With Magna Tiles, students design their own creations which boost their spatial reasoning, and math skills through creative play. Q-students maze challenges students to use their problem-solving skills to create a successful marble maze while introducing the concept of probability and physics. All these tools have unique functions and purposes that focus on specific skills which regular lessons cannot teach. Some of these building sets extend math concepts learned, which will help students solidify what they have learned in the classroom. These different building sets will allow students to explore their creative juices, hone their motor and thinking skills, and also great for cooperative group students activities. These are vital life skills for achieving success.

You will make it possible for my students to apply their knowledge through a hands on activity that allows them to achieve success through exploring and creating something that is uniquely theirs.

The resulting feeling of success will also instill them with the confidence to persevere academically.
