My students need 40 guitar tuners to tune their own guitars during rehearsal and 30 capos so they can play music in different keys using the chord shapes they know.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if you needed to tune your guitar in a room full of guitar players all tuning at the same time? What if you wanted to play lots of music, but only knew a handful of chords, or your hands were not developed enough for large bar chords? What you would need is an electronic tuner and a capo!
My students are middle school students.
They have a passion for music and love to play guitar. The demographics are approximately 85% Latino, 13% African American and 2% Asian and Middle Eastern. 98% of the students qualify for free lunch. The guitar program continues to grow and students love to be able to play in the ensemble. But at this age, they can get frustrated quickly when they have to wait for a tuner or feel limited in what they can do. Students love to feel independent and the electronic tuners allow them to feel confident in their ability to take care of their instrument. The capos allow students to play songs I've chosen, as well as songs they find on their own.
My Project
By providing enough tuners for the class I will be able to shave 10 minutes off of the set-up time. Guitar react to changes in temperature and with winter fast approaching the guitars will need more and more attention. The capos will allow my student access to hundreds of songs. Additionally, my guitar ensembles accompany the school choir. With capos, our ability to play will no longer be limited by challenging bar chords. Students will be able to play in almost any key.
Guitar class can affect the way many students feel about their school and the school experience.
For many, it is an opportunity to work both independently and in a group on something they love and are good at. It helps them develop confidence and is a positive teaching tool that inspires discipline and commitment. My favorite quote by a student so far is, "When I play my guitar I feel like I am somebody."
