Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school English in Van Nuys, CA, where about 85% of students come from low-income households and are eligible for free lunch. Many of them read below or far below grade level. I need to challenge my students, but also need to make the work accessible to them. This year, I would like to read the work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison with my eleventh and twelfth grade students. Reading "The Bluest Eye" and "Song of Solomon" will be both challenging and rewarding for my students. "The Bluest Eye" is a novel about an adolescent African-American girl who is obsessed by white standards of beauty and longs to have blue eyes. "Song of Solomon" is a brilliant novel that explores the quest for cultural identity. Both of these titles will interest my students, and be applicable and relevant to their lives. That is why I am asking for 10 copies of A Student's Guide to Toni Morrison. These guides will help my students to understand the literature and get the most out of their reading experience. The Guides examine Morrison's career, and offer accessible insight for young readers. Novels are placed in historical and biographical context, which will further students' understanding of the work. These guides may make the difference in my students' success in reading these books. They may even motivate some students to continue reading Morrison or other authors, even after they have left my class. I thank you in advance for your support of furthering my students' literacy! These books will surely help my students to improve reading and comprehension skills. Hopefully, it will help them to enjoy reading the novels, as well!
