I teach a class of students with autism. Legos are an effective way for our students to work on their fine motor skills, following directions and working with others.
I teach in an large urban public middle school.
Most of my students are on free or reduced lunch. My class has 6 students with multiple disabilities and Autism. Some of my students are deaf. One has Prader-Willi Syndrome. Others have behavioral difficulties. Many are non-verbal. They need supports throughout their day in order to succeed. Our students learn a combination of academics and life skills throughout the day.
My Project
My students need Lego activities to practice following directions and using their fine motor skills. Our students focus well on activities when the instructions are clear. Many do best with visuals. They all enjoy working with Legos because the final product serves as a reinforcing motivator. These Legos include activity sets for students who have major difficulty with their fine motor skills. Other sets are more difficult but teach by requiring the student to follow directions in order to create an end product. The Lego games will help the students learn to play together and work on their social skills.
Our students' autism impacts them throughout the day.
They have difficulties with their fine motor skills, focus, working with others, concentration and following directions. Legos can help our students with all of these deficits in a motivating manner. Help our students receive these important benefits.
