My new classroom library needs 18 sets of leveled books ranging from levels C - P, including math literature, an Amelia Bedelia set, an I Can Read Series and 20 subscriptions to Time For Kids Magazine.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Let me tell you a little bit about our elementary school. It is located in a part of Miami that I wouldn't exactly call 'safe'. The students come from very low-income homes around the neighborhood, and the entire school receives free or reduced lunch.
Even though many people would consider these kids as "underprivileged", I like to view them as my next challenge- a group that I can really inspire to do great things one day.
Now I'll tell you a little about myself. I've been teaching in NYC for 4 years. I just moved to Miami to continue teaching 2nd graders. When I first walked into my new classroom, I thought there must have been a mistake. "Where are all the books?" I asked the Assistant Principal. She pointed to a table of scattered books. I was in shock to find that there was no "classroom library" where students could find rich literature, and books from a variety of genres they could read from.
So here I am in Miami, trying to create a library for my students to enjoy. I love a good read-aloud and share my passion for good books with my students every day.
Although I've brought an amazing collection of my own favorite books to share with my classroom, it isn't nearly enough to sustain a daily independent reading time of 20 minutes per day for 20 students. My students need an abundance of interesting books that can be matched to their independent reading level in order for them to be kept motivated and entertained during their reading time.
I am asking for a generous amount of books, and I understand it is costly. I am hoping someone will help bring us the library that is much needed in our classroom.
This 'Leveled Library' will assist me in helping these kids excel in not only reading, but in life. It will show them that with perseverance comes success.
