I currently teach high school music at a large public high school in New York City. My students love music and have very distinct preferences and tastes. We are constantly attempting to broaden their knowledge base and give them the opportunity to learn more. We want to build on what they know and share our love of jazz, classical, musical theater, rock, blues, hip hop, and world music. We do not have any way to listen to music in the classroom without bringing in our own personal equipment. We have created projects that ask students to bring in music that reflects their culture. We also have students look at music that responds, reacts, and expresses beliefs about relevant social issues within our society. Through these projects and the analysis that occurs, students projects culminate in creating their own music. We want a classroom CD player and ipod speakers in order for students to be able to share their music with us. They are always so excited to present on what they know and love. We are just as enthusiastic about teaching them what we have learned. Without a classroom CD player and ipod speakers, we feel that we would be extremely limited in our ability to enact best practice in our music class. Please help us enrich student's lives through music. Our students will be forever grateful.
