My students need 10 copies of the book "The Other Wes Moore", 30 copies of "Hate List", and more than 2 dozen other books to help them with teenage issues and problems.
Do you remember what is was like the first time you read a book that made you think about who you were and what you were doing with your life? Books inspire and teach and help us become better people and prepare us for college. Wes Moore wants his story to change lives.
I have students who need to be motivated and inspired and believed in.
I have three classes of students that are so special and wonderful, but school means different things for different kids. These aren't the kids who come in the most expensive fashions or are the homecoming kings and queens. They are often struggling with reading and language and come from homes in transition. All weekend I thought of one student who told me he didn't know where he would be next week as his house was being foreclosed on. I honestly look forward to coming in to work and seeing them and being around them, and I want to do all I can to be the best possible teacher and I need your help.
My Project
Providing The Other Wes Moore, The Hate List and other teen reading books does so much for students. It provides them with stories to talk about social issues and talk about real life. It allows them reading materials that are going to help them with reading comprehension and vocabulary building. Having books allows students to fall into a story and rediscover their elementary school love of reading that slowly gets replaced in high school with texting and social media sites.
We will read these books together and we will talk about what happened to Wes Moore and the other Wes Moore who spends his days in prison.
We will read the Hate List and talk about hate and what is feels like to be left out or a target of bullies. You can make the difference for students by bringing these books to their hands and minds.
