Ms. Hall from Capitol Heights MD is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need class sets of books that fit into the new requirements for Common Core. This novel meets CCSS expectations of rigorous text.

Help us prepare for Common Core! New federal educational standards require students to read more challenging texts. Some of the literature is fiction and some is non-fiction but most of the books in our book closet won't keep their interest. The book I am trying to meet is on the list.
My students are awesome!
I am getting a rare opportunity to "loop" with my students (teach them for a second year). They are now in the 10th grade and have a desire to learn. Our school is in a low income neighborhood minutes from Washington, DC. Most of my students get free or reduced price meals so I can't easily ask them to go to the bookstore and purchase the books on my list. Many of them don't even have the money to catch a bus to the library for the book.
I really want my students to be able to leave their reality and walk in someone else's reality. This book, "In the Time of Butterflies," (which is centered around the lives of several Hispanic women) does that. Most of my students are African-American and do not know much about other races. This book is awesome because it has so many valuable assets. It is considered to be a Common Core Exemplar so that means it is rigorous. It also is about another culture and that will open the door for my students.
Reading and helping students become better readers is my passion.
It is the gateway to their future, however finding the right type of literature is challenging. Common Core guidelines just made that process even harder. Getting this project funded allows me to continue my work with my students.
