SKIP (Support for Kids of Incarcerated Parents), Part II

My project needs 3 cases of Cheddar Goldfish, 2 cases of Cheeze-its, 5 cases of apple juice, and 5 cases of orance juice.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. W.'s classroom raised $454

This project is fully funded

I teach SKIP (Support for Kids of Incarcerated Parents) to grades K-5 at a Title I school where virtually all of our children qualify for free/reduced meals. There is an invisible, yet ever-growing, population of "hurting children" in our community - the children of incarcerated parents. Research shows that these children often experience multiple co-existing psychological problems including extreme sadness, withdrawal, low self-esteem, anger and aggression, poor school attendance and performance, early use of drugs and alcohol, and premature sexual activity. Long-term effects of parental imprisonment include questioning of authority, negative perceptions of the legal system, impaired ability to cope with stress or trauma, and intergenerational patterns of criminal behavior. We have are identifying children in our school who are dealing with this issue. We have already identified thirteen such children (3% of our population). We then propose to offer an ongoing group for these children, grades K-5. No fees will be charged for participation in SKIP. Children will benefit by: learning about incarceration and how to make positive choices to stop the cycle of intergenerational incarceration; exploring their emotions and developing better coping skills; communicating with their incarcerated parent; and building relationships with other children who share similar circumstances. I have been trained as facilitator of this group, and home visits will be made to the families of these children to aid in building school-family relationships. Pre- and post-evaluation forms will be utilized to measure how participation in SKIP is helping the children and the caregivers. We are asking you to fund this project to help pay for envelopes so that the children can correspond regularly with their incarcerated parent(s), sending them letters, poems and artwork. We will also provide nutritious snacks for the children during the group meetings. Child development is profoundly affected by the significant physical absence of a parent, and living in secrecy exacerbates the sadness, loneliness, fear, guilt, and/or anger which these children experience. Children of incarcerated parents are seven times more likely to become involved in the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems, and the hurts and fears, the anger and confusion felt by these children will not heal unattended.
