Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th Grade English at Luther Burbank Middle School in Highland Park, California. I believe that the greatest gift that I could give to my students is to instill in them the love of reading. After finishing the school year, I want students to leave my classroom enthusiastic about reading and eager to embark on new literary adventures.
My school is in a low-income area and though my students and parents are dedicated to education, our resources are limited and it is difficult for students to obtain books appropriate for their reading levels. In order to improve their reading skills and truly embrace the value of reading, my students need better and easier access to young adult novels.
For this proposal, I am requesting 74 single copies of various pieces of grade-appropriate young adult fiction and non-fiction to build my classroom library. The books that I am requesting span across a wide variety of genres. Specific titles include "Holes", "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963", "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Freak the Mighty" and "Tuck Everlasting". Students will be able to check out books to read when they are finished with their class work. With these books, students will have more reading options and be able to find a book that accurately fits their needs.
My hope is that by having a library in our classroom, students will be able to improve their reading skills and most importantly, fully internalize the love of reading. With your generous donation, I can help low-income students gain valuable access to the exciting world of literature.
