FULLY FUNDED! Mr. R.'s classroom raised $535
This project is fully funded
Our class is a Special Day Class at an urban, public, middle-school. The class is composed of 13 bright-eyed, middle-schoolers, each with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder or related disabilities. Our school, located in Oakland, California, serves predominantly students of color from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Students in the class are in grades 6, 7 and 8. They represent a wide range of abilities, and include students considered "nonverbal". The class is co-taught by two enthusiastic, young educators. In addition to academics, we focus on developing social skills and independent living skills. Our students are included with their general education peers to the fullest extent possible.
One of the main difficulties our students experience is sensory impairments. Sensory impairments are common among individuals with autism, and result in such behaviors as rocking, flapping, chewing on objects, tactile hyper-sensitivity and more. A wide array of therapies and products exist to address various sensory impairments. Unfortunately, these products are high in cost, and exceed our modest budget.
This grant will cover the cost of some basic occupational therapy equipment that will enable us to provide sensory-integration therapies for our students with autism. Specifically, we will purchase 1 large therapy ball, 1 weighted vest, 4 weighted cuffs, and 2 therapy stretch bands. These items can be used to treat a variety of conditions, and will be available to all students in our program, now and for years to come.
If you are moved, please consider making a contribution to this project. Your generosity will be repaid with the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped better the lives of some very special young people.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
