As a first-grade teacher in an urban school, I have the privilege of working with children as they begin their first reading journeys. When children discover that they are readers, they become travelers without boundaries. They discover that books can take them to every corner of the world, introducing them to the best of friends and guiding them through mysterious places. The most wonderful thing is that ALL new readers can take these journeys, if only they have the right vehicles. In my classroom, students have daily reading opportunities in the Reading Workshop. Reading Workshop is a structure in which students engage in authentic reading. The children choose a cozy corner, rug, or pillow, snuggle up with their very own book box and prepare to travel as they open books that they have chosen. Each child experiences success because they are reading books that are personally interesting and appropriate for where they are as readers. Because all children vary in their reading interests, experience, and ability, many books are needed to supply each child with enough interesting, appropriate books to satisfy their reading appetites throughout the year. It is for this reason that I am asking for Lakeshore's Leveled Books Classroom Library, which is a set of 80 books at 16 gradually increasing levels of difficulty. These books are colorful, developmentally appropriate, and appealing to children. Having this tool available in the classroom will mean that when students ?shop? for books in our Classroom Library, they will find a greater variety of books that they can read with success, and when a new reader finds that he or she can read with success, it gives them the confidence and desire to continue reading. These books will also be available for students to check out and read at home. As most of my students come from low-income families, it is necessary and important that books for home reading are available. As a potential donor, not only do you have the opportunity to provide more vehicles for children?s reading journeys, but you have the chance to introduce a child to his new best friend, her new favorite place, and ultimately, change a life.
