Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever seen the transformation that occurs when a child puts on a simple costume and becomes a character in a story? I have, and it is truly a magical moment for teaching. The twenty students in my third grade class recently read a play in their textbook. The first time we read it as a class I had to coax students to volunteer to read a part in the play. The following day, I brought two props to use during our second reading. Once students saw the props, every hand went up volunteering to play a role. I had just brought in a cape and a scarf-nothing that fancy. The wearers of the props transformed into the story characters. It was the first time we all enjoyed a story together. I believe that getting students actively involved in their reading will improve their understanding of the text and their appreciation for theatrical literature. I would like to give my students a chance to become part of every story we read. In order to do this, I need more props. A simple cape and scarf will just not do to keep students motivated for the entire year.
Just a few simple props to add to my starter collection, will be a delight to students for years to come. Please take a moment to browse my prop list and consider the benefits they will add to the reading pleasure of my budding little actors.
Thank You.
