Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember listening to what your teacher was trying to explain to you about the lesson and not quite getting it?
My students are an awesome bunch of kids at a charter school in a socioeconomically challenged South Central Los Angeles.
All of my students are at the precipice in their life where they are still, what I call, "sparkly". They giggle, they smile, they laugh, they are hopeful. My desire is to retain that hope and inspire them to seek knowledge.
My Project
I am requesting a document camera that has the ability to display any handout I wish. With this document camera, I can access all of my students no matter their learning style: kinesthetic, auditory, or visual. This technology will allow me to use the same handout they are using, and describe exactly what it is that I expect from them, using visuals such as color coding; this is especially helpful for my Special Education students.
Currently, I tape a copy of the handout to the board and show the students step by step how to complete it. However, trying to explain an assignment in this way can get very confusing to my students who have not been able to purchase glasses for financial reasons, are not auditory learners, or have difficulty processing information. Most of my students are English Language Learners, which means they need to hear things several times to be able to understand it.
This project is so important because my students are our future.
Their ability to read well and think deeply will affect us all. Not only do we have a responsibility to make sure that our students are our number one priority, we have a moral obligation to do so.
