I teach juniors and seniors at a careers-centered public school. Each year, my English 4 Honors students are required to read either two novels by one author or six plays by a playwright, and my AP Literature students are required to read novels of literary merit. My school currently doesn’t have a library. Consequently, the only books my students have easy access to are the ones in my classroom. Unfortunately, I don’t have all of the books the students need to complete this assignment.
In recent years, my students have shown a greater interest in Asian culture because of the manga and anime drawings, the Wii system, and movies set in Asian countries. Consequently, they are choosing more of the Asian or Asian-American authors to study. I would like to provide books by Amy Tan, Fae M. Ng, Maxine Hong Kingston, Ha Jin, Gish Jen, Lisa See, Chang-Rae Lee, Joy Kogawa, and Lan Cao. Then, I would have novels that reflected the Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese cultures. If you fund my grant, you will ensure my students have the “good books” to read, critique, and review.
