I Have a Dream... Analyzing Political Images in AP Gov.
My students need a document camera in order to view and analyze political cartoons and charts/graphs/tables in their AP Government class.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember show and tell in elementary school? Someone would bring in something really neat -- but hard to see -- and it would take forever for the item or picture to be passed around the classroom so that everyone could experience it. That's what it often feels like in my classroom.
My school is a small, urban, college-prep, public school focused on students who want to be the first member of their family to attend college.
The vast majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and belong to racial groups that are underrepresented in higher education. Because my school's mission is to prepare ALL students for college, every 12th grader -- regardless of prior preparation or skill level -- takes AP Government with me and I love how seriously my students take the class and how hard my lower-skilled students work to master the rigorous, college-level curriculum.
My Project
I am requesting a document camera, which will allow me to use the LCD projector in my room to project images printed on regular paper (not transparency film). Right now, students in my class waste valuable class time waiting for images to circulate. Compared to "typical" AP students, many of my students start off behind, so we need every possible minute of class time to be spent learning about our government and political system, not demonstrating the differences in access to technology between high-income and low-income schools.
Now, imagine this: we are analyzing an amazing political cartoon about political polarization that a student found in a magazine...all of the class is able to look at the image together as we work together to analyze it. This is my dream... that we will be able to discuss government and politics together as a class. I appreciate that organization like DonorsChoose and programs like the Chevron Classroom Challenge could help make this a reality
Perhaps the most important quality of a democracy is that the voting population is educated enough to make good decisions in the voting booth and the way to do this is to provide all kids -- especially those who grow up in poverty -- with equal access to educational resources.
Please help me support my students, who will be old enough to vote by the end of the school year, as they explore what it means to be a politically engaged American citizen.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
