"I understand it when you do it!" This statement comes when the only work students see is their instructor's. I would like to display homework problems done by students so that the class can pick out examples of good work and work needing improvement. A document camera will allow this to happen.
The students in my classes are from a large (for Iowa) school district.
The student population is culturally and economically diverse. Most of my students have aspirations of attending post-secondary institutions. I find my students to be friendly and eager to achieve. They want to understand their mathematics coursework and its value in the real world.
My Project
One of the mathematical practices outlined in the National Core Curriculum is "Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others." Currently, if I want to facilitate this practice, I must make copies of student work for a subsequent class day or have students copy their work onto a white board. Having a document camera attached to my room's Smart board would allow me to "strike while the iron is hot." In other words, I could instantly display student work and ask students to critique it. This would allow the student whose work is displayed to immediately see their error. It would also allow classmates to compare the work to their own with the goal of improving everyone's work. Additionally, seeing assorted responses to a single problem would allow students to analyze and learn from the work of others.
Our district works hard to produce graduates who are ready to move "to the next level" whether it be in further education or immediate employment.
Last year the district spent a great deal of money to install Smart boards in most of our school's classrooms. Having this technology has allowed me to improve my instruction by displaying interactive materials and textbook resources. Adding a document camera to this technology would also give my students a view into the minds of classmates.
