Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is ready for the students to walk in and enjoy. It's colorful, warm, inviting, and it's a place they want to be every day. Unfortunately, my classroom library is full of hand-me-down books that are dull and boring.
I work at a school which has a majority Hispanic and African American population.
It is nestled in a neighborhood so many of the students walk to and from school.
Sadly very few parents are involved in their student's education at my school. Many children live with grandparents or other relatives. Last year I had the cutest little girl whose father had passed away and mother was in jail. She went between Grandmothers and Aunt's house. Every day, despite her home life she bounced into my room with a huge smile ready to read me the book she had took home and worked on. That was my first year to teach and I KNOW I will never forget that sweet girl.
I work at a school with exceptional staff that truly care about their students. I know that I may be the safest environment for my students. I may be the only place they get a hug or a pat on the back. I may be the only person that wants them to succeed. I know that my school may be the only pace they get a hot meal.
My Project
The resources I am requesting will help provide my students with leveled books that will increase their reading skills while enjoying the books they are reading.
Many of the students I encounter have parents that cannot read or write. They are usually high school drop-outs. The books I requested will help my students better their life by ending the vicious cycle of poverty. They will be able to read. They will be able to finish school and graduate. AND, they will be able to encourage if not TEACH their parents to read as well.
My students are given 45 minutes a day to independently read a book of their choosing. They will choose from these books on a level that is appropriate for them and work toward the harder books.
My project is so important to me because it will positively impact the lives of every student in my classroom.
They will be able to smile when they pick up a book instead of cower. They will be excited to be there instead of being ready for the day to be over.
Donators should feel warmth in their heart when they donate to this project knowing that they are forever changing the lives of many, many students and their families.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
