They won't read it unless it's well written. I have learned this through my teaching. I have found two series of books that even my most reluctant readers have not been able to put down.
I will be teaching an inclusion classroom, that includes children with a variety of learning strengths and challenges.
High quality, interesting books will be critical to their learning experience at their fourth grade level. Up until this point, most students have been learning to read. In fourth grade they make the major switch to reading to learn. These books that I am requesting will provide them with that opportunity.
In my previous years I have watched these books inspire children to read for enjoyment and to request more book recommendations to continue reading at home. It is amazing!
My Project
I feel it's important to own these books. We had been doing interlibrary loans to provide the books I am requesting. Sadly, last year we were 3/4 of the way through the books when the libraries needed them back. I cannot describe the disappointment on my students' faces when I had to take the books back before they could finish them. I never want to do that to a group of children again.
I have observed that when one reading group is reading a particular book the other reading groups become interested and want a turn at reading the book.
If I can keep the books in my classroom, I can provide each student with an opportunity to experience these novels. You may notice that some books in the series are missing. That is because I have been able to purchase those books for my students on my own. But now I need your help!
