My Students
"Reading is thinking!" is our classroom mantra. Second graders may be able to read words, but most of them have not connected the words to thoughts. I have been doing research on ways to reach my students with focused comprehension lessons.
My students are bright, second graders with a love of learning.
They come from mostly low income families, but have caring parents. Most of the reading that my students enjoy is done at school. Whenever I give reading assignments for after school time, I have to provide the books for students to read. This is why it is so important that I provide excellent reading instruction in the classroom. I want my students to have the best possible education they can receive.
My Project
In my desire to improve my students' reading comprehension, I have been doing research on ways to better teach this most important skill. I have learned that having students make connections to the books they are reading is very important to their level of comprehension. Through my own reading I have found books that can be used to teach the different reading strategies that students should be using to improve their comprehension skills. I am planning lessons using each book to teach particular strategies such as making connections, inferring, visualizing, and asking questions. There is no more important skill for a student than reading comprehension. Understanding what they are reading is necessary for all their future educational endeavors and to become contributing citizens.
Most children have a natural love of reading.
As educators it is our job to foster this love and make sure that our students are understanding and growing as individuals through a love of books and a love of learning. In making sure that my students are obtaining the best comprehension instruction that I can provide, I feel that I can put them on the road to a lifetime of educational success.
