My Students

Do you remember being bored in history class, wondering why that old stuff mattered? Do you know what it's like to compete with a Nintendo DSI or the newest iPhone? Well, I remember thinking like that when I was 11 years old. And, I fight for the attention of 125 kids on a daily basis.

The kids I teach come from a diverse population.

Some are new to NYC, some new to the country, but all are new to being teenagers in a large middle school. The hallways must be a terrifying place, because as a 6th grader, you stand out in a moving crowd of ever-growing upperclassmen. But despite their perilous hallway adventures, they always make it to my classroom with smiles on their faces. Their learning styles and natural talents come from a variety of backgrounds. It takes some cleverness on my part to come up with activities they can all enjoy on topics they might otherwise glance over. As eleven-year-olds attending an inner-city school, they are in a unique situation where they are transitioning from elementary school ideals and embracing a new culture that is middle school. Their expectations for the next three years are daunting and there is a lot of work to be done!

My Project

The resources I'm requesting will help keep our classroom an exciting and worry-free place of learning. As the first middle-school history teacher they will have, it's important that I set the bar high! This means I need to get creative so they can be innovative. I teach ancient world history, which for some children, can be very hard to relate to. In order for them to grasp core concepts and essential skills throughout the year, students are given the challenge to CREATE some truly great projects. These projects give them a chance to bring the past a little closer to the present. More importantly, they walk away with something they can be proud of! For example, we use charcoals and tempera paints when learning about ancient cave art. We build dioramas to construct areas of the Nile river in ancient Egypt. When learning about ancient India, we make bright & colorful mandalas.

Donations will help students "think outside the box" by giving them the materials they need to be creative in their learning.

These aren't just basic supplies you would be funding, but instead, they are essential to our classroom needs. In addition, these resources would connect a very broad range of students to one another. For example, ESL students will be able to work side-by-side with a native speaker they might not otherwise get to know. Help us CREATE a learning community!
