Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My inner-city students dream of blasting off to space and exploring the solar system! So far our space shuttle is out of commission, but in the meantime we want to conduct our own study of the planets and build dioramas that can take us through the solar system on a smaller scale!
Much of our day is spent reading formulaic stories that fail to truly capture the imagination of my students. When they discover interesting books, particularly nonfiction ones, they are inspired in an entirely new way.
Aside from learning the basics, my inner-city students are learning to read and write in Spanish. These Spanish-language books will make them all the more eager to succeed in mastering their language skills. We have so few sets of books, with students arguing over them, that this set will be a cornerstone for literacy and scientific study throughout the year!
Without your help, our dreams of reaching for the stars will remain lightyears away. Your generous help in getting these materials for us will enable us to read, explore, and dream all year long!
