This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
California 7th graders need dissection specimens. Unfortunately, 7th grade science is not a state tested subject and therefore it receives no funding from our school district. Science takes a back seat to language arts and math.
I teach 7th Grade Life Science in a high poverty neighborhood. Our school has the lowest junior high test scores in the area. As a result, we have had our department budget cut to zero dollars per teacher. The school will not pay for any science materials for the third year in a row.
For fifteen years, I have been able to offer my students frog and sheep heart dissection as part of our life science curriculum. We already have the trays and tools for dissection in our storeroom. Many of my students are highly motivated and want to attend the local high school's medical magnet program. I would like to continue to be able to provide them with a hands on opportunity to learn about the human body through dissection.
Last year, I was fortunate enough to receive a dissection grant through Donors Choose. I am hoping that I can once again offer this week long dissection to my students. Your help really does make a big difference. Thank you for your consideration.
