My Students
One of the joys of being a child is cuddling up and having your favorite story read to you over and over again. Unfortunately in high poverty areas, there are children who do not get stories read to them at all. This has a direct impact on their ability to learn literacy skills.
Our third grade classroom is made up of students who are so eager to learn and succeed.
With a variety of economic, social, and cultural backgrounds, we all come together each school day with similar goals.
Within the diversity of our school are students who don't even own books at home and students who are lucky enough to get read to every day. We have parents who are strong advocates for their children, and parents who are not educationally supportive of their children at all.
My Project
If I could sit with each of my students individually, every day, and read them a story, I would. Providing children opportunities to hear how language is spoken, how text is read, and to imagine the story beyond the page has a direct impact on student's reading and writing capabilities.
These 6 mp3 players - as simple as they are - will provide my students with an escape into the literary world. My students will be able to find a quiet spot in our classroom to listen to reading and practice their own reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.
They love to listen to stories, so this also provides opportunities for them to work independently, which creates more time for me to work directly with small groups of children.
In a district that is struggling to maintain the quality of education due to budget cuts, we are trying to find creative ways to ensure that each student receives a chance to prove themselves as a learner.
These mp3 players are an easy way to promote a love of reading and learning in our classroom!
This project will benefit my classroom this year, and hopefully for many years to come!
