This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. . ." Lord Acton. This sentiment permeates the political revolutions unit in Global History III. As students learn about the French and Russian Revolutions, "Animal Farm" by George Orwell is the perfect literary accompaniment.
I teach at an urban high-needs high school.
My students have limited access to the "cultural capitol" necessary for success in this globalized world. My students not only benefit, but appreciate the opportunities that allow them to think outside the boxes that have confined them intellectually and educationally. Inserting literature from the cannon of literature into history class serves a multitude of pedagogical needs. I believe that part of the success of this book comes from students appreciation of the challenge and expectation.
My Project
Several years ago, after brainstorming with colleagues, I decided to start teaching "Animal Farm" by George Orwell while doing the political revolutions unit in Global History/Geography III. The book has been successful since the first class. Using the book as a critical lens, students are able to dive deeper into the motivations of the major political revolutions and their outcomes. I have been impressed with the deep levels of understanding that my students have demonstrated while conducting literary circles of the book. They will need the ability to think critically (and apply the skill in their writing) in college and if they do not learn the skill now, their chances of success diminish drastically.
With your generosity, all of the sophomores will be able to read this book at the same time.
Because I have only had one class set I have had to rotate teaching it. As we introduce the new Common Core Standards, incorporating literature into Social Studies curriculum will enhance the skill set and the students will learn exponentially. Time, as always, will be at a premium, so it is important that I teach the book simultaneously with two to three classes.
