Improving reading, writing, and grammar skills through dictionaries!
I teach 5th grade, self-contained (meaning, I teach all subjects), at a Title I school (most kids are on free/reduced lunches). My past and current classes includes many ESL students, as well as students who still struggle with reading on their appropriate grade level.
I recently started team teaching with the ESL teacher. Through her help, I am finally understanding the difficulties that second language learners are having with English. Through many reading and English activities, she and I have worked hard to further improve their grasp of the English language. This includes a lot of work with dictionaries.
However, I lack the funds to buy a class set of reliable, age-appropriate dictionaries. I have some larger, hardback ones, but these are outdated and lack many of the words we look up. Also, I don't have nearly enough for each student to use on their own, which makes individual work a struggle and causes an increase in socializing.
I want each student to be able to have easy access to paperback dictionaries to use during reading and English assignments, vocabulary activities, and writing activities. I, along with the ESL teacher, work hard to improve the students vocabulary and reading skills, but know we can do better if we had the right resources.
With your help, my class can have the right resources, that being updated dictionaries that are age-appropriate. As well as using these during the school day, I will be using them in an after-school Dictionary Club I am starting for my ESL students. With these dictionaries, I can further my students understanding of the grammar and language skills that will help them decode words, infer meanings of unknown words, and enhance their writing abilities. These skills will definitely be beneficial throughout their academic career.
