I teach 4th grade at a mid-sized school where the children are placed in homeroom math classes randomly rather than by ability. Therefore, I have a very wide range of abilities and enthusiasm in each class I teach. I want to build a strong community of mathematical thinkers and reasoners. Auction Math will go a long way towards helping children not only love math, but also become life long learners in the area of money management, building a savings, and investing wisely. Auction Math will work this way:
Children will complete challenging math activities and play high level math games that will correspond to the content being presented through the regular math curriculum. Each time a child wins a game or completes an activity, he will earn funny money to put in his account in the Funny Money Auction Bank. Money kept in the bank will be tracked just like money in a savings account would. Income tax will be charged on all money earned, and interest will be accrued on all money saved. Children will participate in these activities daily and mark all savings they earn into a Leger that will record their total auction capitol.
Once a week I will hold a classroom auction where students will have a chance to invest their savings in something that interests them. Auction items will range in value from small school supplies to coupons for items at local restaurants. Funny Money not spent in one auction may be saved and used at another auction. Often identical items will be included in the same auction so children can understand how supply and demand works.
