My Students
I wish I had a learning tool that could provide self-correcting, independent practice for my students struggling with alphabet recognition. Some Kindergarten students are just not ready for a computer, and really need a tool they can manipulate without becoming frustrated.
My Kindergarten student demographics include a large number of free or reduced lunch, ELL, and students with IEPs.
I am dedicated to meeting every student at his or her level and moving them forward on the learning continuum. In order to achieve this, I need to have materials and activities available for students to keep them challenged and motivated throughout the day, when I am working with groups at different ability levels. Students benefiting from this project have been identified as at-risk. Usually, there is little access to quality educational games, books or toys in their homes, however, they really do respond to manipulatives. They do love puzzles, but most alphabet puzzles and manipulatives available in our centers do not move children to the word-building step, or, if they do, they are too difficult for children to use independently. It is critical that meaningful and enjoyable activities are available for these students when I am working with higher-level learners.
My Project
The LeapDesk Workstation I am requesting will be used to teach and assess phonemic awareness and phonics skills, especially letter recognition which is a big hurdle for our lowest learners. This tool includes upper and lowercase letters to manipulate, activity cards and sound and light features for a total multisensory learning experience. The LeapDesk Workstation delivers systematic and explicit teacher led instruction, both whole group and small group as well as guided practice. The audio feedback is immediate and constructive. I will use this mainly for small group instruction and guided practice for the lowest group of students in my classroom.
Your support of this project will allow several things to happen in my classroom.
It will provide quality activities for struggling students that are motivating. It will provide feedback to use in meeting each student at his or her level of learning and closing learning gaps. It will allow students who usually have difficulty working independently a chance to do so and avoid off-task behavior as a result of their frustration. It will allow more time to work with students at other levels.
