Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the art teacher at CES 58x in the South Bronx. We are a K-6 Title I elementary school where 100% of our children receive free lunch.
This is the first year in a very long time that CES 58x has had an art program. Thanks to an enthusiastic principal, our students will be able to express themselves creatively, some for the first time. My students are anxious, excited and eager to tackle any project we work on in class.
In addition to teaching art, I am an artist who works mainly in photography. I would love to share this with my students as a way to share their lives and understand their community. This semester I primarily teach grades 4-6. I would like to include a unit with each of these grades that will focus on visual literacy through the use of a camera. Students will use the photographic image to critically look at themselves, the community that surrounds them and it's context within the world. We will create books, write about each others photographs, look at other photographer's work and eventually have an exhibition at school. I will be able to incorporate Social Studies, Art History and Art Appreciation as well as Writing and Literacy curiculums.
I would like to use disposable cameras for this project. I feel that this way the students can freely carry them around and fully document their lives. There will be around 350 students enrolled in these grades. I would like to give each of them one camera. I would also need to have the film processed and printed.
I cannot stress how much my students need to feel that their lives and voices matter. As I said earlier, this is the first time most of my students have had an arena to express themselves. I hope that you can help the students at CES 58x to have another outlet. We will not let you down.
